Tip of the Month: April 2002

During times of economic downturn is a great time to look into your own organization and make some very important decisions.  What are we good at?  What do we believe will be different about the marketplace when we recover?  What do we want our company to be like as we recover?  Most companies will be taking the hibernation approach.  This means they will do nothing until there are strong signs of the economic recovery and will let the recovery drive decisions.  I recommend you take advantage of this slow time to meet and learn with your employees.  If not now, when?  As soon as the business picks up, which it will, you will be too busy to want to devote much time to the soft skills training.  Now is the best time to get to know your customers better.  Get out from behind the desk, plan & learn with your employees and do the same with customers and suppliers.  While others are hibernating and employees are scared of layoffs, get out and become aggressive.  You have an open door and time.  Plan for, and make the recovery.
