Can you imagine what a dead elephant would
look like if it were in your workplace. It would be large - very large.
It would take up a lot of room. It would get smelly if not attended to
quickly - very smelly. How would you move it? Who would do it? Perhaps
workers would attempt to ignore it because they don't have the solution
to getting it out of the way. "What elephant? I don't see any elephant.
If you see one, you figure out what to do with it." But the more everyone
tries to ignore it the worse the problem gets. The longer it lies there
the harder and harder it will be to get rid of.
Organizations frequently have one or more dead elephants
lying around right in the middle of things. Dead elephants are anything
that happens that causes discontent or discord and are not dealt with.
The problems can start small and seem to go away, but more and more things
happen, building upon the underlying problem. Workers don't know what to
do so they try to remain productive, but invariably end up "walking around"
the elephant, pretending not to see it. Productivity slips, employees leave,
and no one seems to know why. Dead elephants are everywhere. Imagine what
things would be like if they were gone........... |
